HISTORY OF THE EWE PEOPLE AND OUR ASSOCIATION IN CHICAGO

History of the Ewe People

The Ewe (Eʋeawó “Ewe people”, Eʋedukɔ́ “Ewe nation” are a people located in the southeast corner of Ghana, east of the Volta River, in an area now described as the Volta Region, in southern Togo and western Benin. They speak the Ewe language (Eʋegbe), and are related to other speakers of Gbe languages such as the Fon and the Aja of Togo and Benin.

The Ewe are essentially a patrilineal people; the founder of a community was the established chief, and was then usually succeeded by his paternal relatives. The Ewe is divided geographically between Ghana (Volta Region), its eastern neighbor, Togo (southern) and the western part of Benin (formerly Dahomey). This area was colonized by the Germans and was originally called Togoland. After the German defeat in World War I, the Ewe homeland was split between France and England. Most Ewes can trace male ancestors to their original villages and make their territorial divisions along those lines. Extended families are the most important units of Ewe social life. Ewe has never supported a hierarchical concentration of power within a large state.

Forming the Association in Chicago

The idea to form an association that would bring all Ewes together in the Chicago Metropolitan area for the common purpose was hatched at the residence of Dr. & Mrs. Samuel Oklu located at 5483 South Hyde Park in August 1974. Present at the meeting were the following: Mr. Gilbert Kodzo Ntow, Mrs. Comfort Kokuma, Mr. Julius Kokuma, Mr Yaphet Sampram, Mr. Sampson Ababio, Mr. Kofi G. Agbley, and Mr. Lawrence Kofi Asimah.

The first meeting was of the new association was held in September 1974 in the basement of Mr. Gilbert Ntow located at 6824 Harper. The new name of the association called Milenovisi Habobo on a suggestion of Mrs. Comfort Kokuma, was adopted at this meeting. Present at the meeting were the following: Dr. George Abatso, Dr. Emmanuel Bansa, Dr. Francis Kokuma (Deceased), Ms.& Mrs KudzoAdigbli, Mr. Edmond Kwaku Agbeko (deceased), Dr. Evans Fiakpui, Dr.Richard Nyako and Mr. Kafui Amegashie. The 1st officers elected at that meeting were: Dr. Samuel Oklu as Chairman, Mr. Kafui Amegashie as Secretary and Mr. Gilbert Ntow as the Treasurer. The chairman remained in his position till 1976.
