On July 1st 2026, The Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago (GNC) hoisted the Black Star Flag over the blue skies covered only by iconic skyscrappers above the Daley Plaza Center in Downtown Chicago.

An effort begun under President Kassim Abubakari's administration was fulfilled by President Effah Ameyaw as state officials including the Illinois Comptroller Susana A. Mendoza and a representative from Cook County Board President Toni Periwinkle's office, the President of the Ghanaian Council of Chiefs Nana Kwame Bayin Okutseaku VIII, and several other notable attendees gathered in unity, communal spirit, and reverence for Ghana's leadership in sovereignty.

Susana A. Mendoza's heart stirring tribute noted the Ghanaian community's exemplary contributions to the city's cultural and economic infrastructure through music, entrepreneurship, cusine and traditions. She affirmed that Ghanaians strengthen Illinois everyday as healthcare professionals, business owners, educators, public servants and community leaders. Mendoza also connected the flag raising to America's 250th Independence Day by noting shared democratic values between the nations.

Several other speeches including a representative from Toni Periwinckle's office and Chief Nana Kwame Bayin Okutseaku highlighted Ghana's relationship with African American history and future, referencing WEB DuBois and PanAfricanist movements.

The day was filled with infectious joy and traditional Ghanaian cultural performances including Adowa and Kpanlogo dancers and stiltwalkers.

July 1st now stands as a landmark date in the history of Illinois and Ghana. On this day the Black Star rose and with it the aspirations of a people who have found their home away from home.
