The Legacy of Bonoman and Ahafo People in the Ghanaian Diaspora”

Preserving Bono-Ahafo Heritage and Strengthening Community Bonds in the Diaspora

Origins and Historical Background
The Bonoman and Ahafo Association represents Ghanaians from the Bono (also known as Brong) and Ahafo regions—areas rich in history and culture within Ghana’s Akan ethnic landscape. The Bono people trace their origins to the ancient Bono State, founded around the 11th century in what is now Techiman, often regarded as the cradle of Akan civilization. Closely connected to this heritage, the Ahafo region shares in the traditions, festivals, and values that have long shaped the identity of these communities.
Formation in Chicago and Mission
In 1998, a group of Bono and Ahafo descendants in Chicago came together to form a cultural association dedicated to preserving their heritage, promoting unity, and supporting members living in the diaspora. The Bonoman and Ahafo Association of Chicago was formally established as a nonprofit organization with leadership committed to maintaining strong ties to their roots while fostering community development in the United States.
Cultural Activities and Community Engagement
The association actively promotes Bono and Ahafo cultural practices through participation in major Ghanaian cultural events such as GhanaFest, where traditional music, dance, and attire highlight the richness of their heritage. The association also celebrates significant festivals like Apoo and Kwafie, reinforcing cultural identity and offering opportunities for members to connect and share their traditions. Beyond celebrations, the group organizes educational programs, health initiatives, and charitable activities to uplift its members and the wider community, ensuring that cultural values are lived and passed down.
Affiliation with the Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago (GNC)
As a vital part of the Ghanaian community in Chicago, the Bonoman and Ahafo Association is a recognized member of the Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago (GNC)—the umbrella organization that brings together ethnic, hometown, and cultural groups across the city. Through this affiliation, the association contributes to the vibrant cultural mosaic of the Ghanaian diaspora by participating in joint events, collaborating on community service projects, and advocating for the interests of Bono and Ahafo descendants alongside other Ghanaian groups. The association’s involvement with the Council of Brong-Ahafo Associations of North America (COBAANA) further strengthens its connections across the continent and the diaspora, uniting members beyond Chicago in a shared mission of cultural preservation and community support.
